A planer (102, fig 2) having a housing (104, fig 2), a shoe (138, fig 2), and an aperture (136, fig 2) in the shoe is disclosed. The planer includes a motor 112 mounted adjacent to the aperture in the shoe, a stator 114 non-rotatably mounted to the housing, and a rotor 130 arranged substantially coaxially around the stator and adapted to rotate relative to the stator. At least one blade 132 is mounted for rotation with the rotor, which protrudes through the aperture to engage and remove surface material from a workpiece. The centre of gravity of the planer may be located below an actuator (108, fig 2) on the housing when the planer is supported by the handle. A plurality of ribs may be provided on an internal surface of the rotor to generate an airflow in the motor. The motor may be a claw pole motor (see figs 4 to 12), or a laminated core motor (see fig 13). |
