[Also in Division B7] In an axially adjustable steering column including two telescoping steering shaft portions 12, 16 one of which has a hexagonal cross-section and the other a corresponding hexagonal bore, a U-shaped spring member 22 adjustably preloaded by a screw 38 is interposed between the shaft portions 12, 16 such as to tend to rotate one relative to the other and thereby eliminate torsional play therebetween. The spring member 22 comprises a pair of wave-like resilient fingers 22, 26 which are located in cavities 28, 30 formed by removing opposite portions of the shaft portion 12, and are each offset from the shaft axis to exert a resultant couple on the adjacent surfaces of each shaft portion 12, 16. Tightening the screw 38 increases the pressure exerted by the fingers 22, 26. The spring element 22 may alternatively comprise three or more fingers. |
