An endoscope system has an endoscope for capturing an image inside a body cavity by an imaging device provided at the insertion section tip, a position detection device for detecting, from lumen information imaged by the imaging device, positional information related to the position of the insertion section tip and used for insertion of the insertion section tip, a recording device for recording with lapse of time the positional information detected by the position detection section, a determination section for determining whether operation for detecting the positional information by the position detection device satisfies preset conditions, and a direction calculation device which, when the result of the determination does not satisfy the conditions, reads positional information recorded in the recording device and outputs information on a direction in which the insertion section tip is to be inserted.
