An end effector, and methods for constructing composite members, comprises a compaction roller 22 and a redirect roller 40 which translate synchronously along the compaction axis. An arrangement of spools and rollers directs tow to the redirect roller at substantially a right angle to the compaction axis. Consequently, movement of the compaction roller along the compaction axis induces little, if any, changes in tow tension resulting in substantially constant tow tension which reduces rewinding of the tow supply spools. Preferably a plurality of tow supply spools is arranged radially around corresponding redirect rollers. Backing may be removed from the tow by backing take-up spools 36, and dancer rollers may direct the tow and maintain its tension. The effector may be used for aircraft construction, maintenance, modification or repair. |
