The present invention provides a chlorine-containing pyrotechnic composition which is substantially free of perchlorate which composition comprises a nitrocellulose which is derived from a fibrous nitrocellulose starting material that has at least partially been dissolved during the process of preparing the pyrotechnic composition, and a colourant. The invention further provides a firework article comprising said pyrotechnic composition, and a method for preparing the same.
