PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phenol resin composition for friction material requiring no degasification in molding, generating neither void nor crack in molded products, excellent in heat-resistance and having good abrasion resistance, and to provide a production method thereof. SOLUTION: The phenol resin composition for friction material is prepared by uniformly melt-mixing a novolak type phenol resin, an epoxy resin, a curing catalyst and a solid resol type phenol resin, wherein the ratios of each ingredient are preferably 50-95 wt.% novolak type phenol resin, 1-50 wt.% epoxy resin, 0.1-10 wt.% curing catalyst and 1-50 wt.% solid resol type phenol resin.
