PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an interferometer reducing a polarization dependent frequency shift (PDFS) arising due to an incompleteness of a branch element, and also to provide a demodulator equipped with the interferometer. SOLUTION: The interferometer 1 has a half mirror 12 for branching an incident light beam L0 into multiple branched light beams L1, L2, and makes the light beam L1, L2 branched by the half mirror 12 to interfere with each other. The interferometer 1 is arranged on an optical path of the branched light beams L1, L2, and has phase plates 13, 15 for compensating a phase difference between the branched light beams L1, L2 generated when branching the incident light beam L0 by the half mirror 12. It is not necessarily the case that the phase plates 13, 15 are arranged on both optical paths of the branched light beams L1, L2, but it is necessary to arrange them on at least one of the optical paths of the branched light beams L1, L2.
