The support (1) has recesses (3) and lateral supports (4) arranged in a thorax area of a patient (2). The recesses are arranged such that a central spinal column is supported only in a breadth of 5-15 centimeters in a dorsal position. A tilting mechanism (5) is provided for supporting bones and an upper part of a body of the patient. The recesses permit access to the thorax. The lateral supports center the patient on a middle path between the recesses.
