The window lifter has a swivel mounted drive arm (21) and a device (5) for compensating transverse movements (in the Y-direction of the vehicle ) of the window lifter as the window is raised and lowered. This compensating device is supported to rotate about the X-axis of the vehicle and/or movable in the Y-direction. The compensating device can be supported on a supporting part of the door or vehicle body through bearing blocks (4,4'). The window lifter can swivel about the X-axis of the vehicle over a swivel area of about five degrees either side of the centre position.
