PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of modulating the spatial vector of an AC-AC direct converter which merely needs the use of a single carrier for three phases, at carrier comparison. SOLUTION: This is a method of modulating the spatial vector of the AC-AC direct converter which PWM-controls the bidirectional switches SW1-SW9 of the AC-AC direct converter 3 from a polyphase AC power source by PWM control. A switching pattern, using a virtual indirect spatial vector, is converted into a switching pattern consisting of the combination of five vectors using direct conversion type spatial vectors; a switching pattern which meets specified requirements is selected out of converted switching patterns; the duty of the five vectors of the selected switching pattern is calculated from the duty relational expression between the indirect spatial vector and the direct conversion type spatial vector;, and based on this calculated duty, the AC-AC converter is PWM-controlled.
