PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element using a flexible substrate such as a plastic film, wherein external form tolerance and assembling workability are not reduced even when a side surface gas barrier layer for preventing gas invasion from a side surface of the substrate is provided. SOLUTION: The gas barrier layer 19 made of an inorganic material such as SiNx and having 250 nm thickness is formed on cut end surfaces of flexible substrates each comprising a substrate supporting material 11 and gas barrier layers 18 formed on both surfaces thereof. The gas barrier layer is formed at one stretch by low temperature sputtering to a bundle formed by stacking a plurality of single cells. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
