PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress torque variation accompanying spark-delaying of ignition timing when the ignition timing is spark-delayed for suppression of knocking in a control device for an internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: Operation characteristic of an intake valve is varied so that a suction amount of air is increased according to spark-delaying of the ignition timing. A required amount of air for compensating torque reduction accompanying spark-delaying of the ignition timing is preferably calculated, and the operation characteristic of the intake valve is varied based on the required amount of air. When a suction amount of air is in short supply relative to the required amount of air only in the intake valve, throttle opening is also varied based on the short suction amount of air.
