PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent device in which emission efficiency, emission lifetime and manufacturability are improved. SOLUTION: The organic electroluminescent device comprises a function layer 7 including a hole block layer 6, and a first electrode 3 and a second electrode 8 for applying a voltage to the function layer 7 wherein the hole block layer 6 includes an organic compound produced by introducing a substituent containing an aromatic ring having electron transportability or a heterocycle having electron transportability to the side chain pyridyl group of polypyridine.
