PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the entanglement, twists and wrinkles of laundry and to end washing and rinsing steps without damaging a washing effect against strong stains and an energy saving property. SOLUTION: In the drive of a rotary drum 4 whose rotary axis direction is made horizontal or inclined downwards from the horizontal direction from the open front surface side to the back surface side to be a bottom part, the drum type washing machine includes: a forward and reverse arc rotation drive mode of alternately repeating rapid forward arc rotation and rapid reverse arc rotation over 90 degrees and less than 200 degrees; and a forward and reverse continuous rotation drive mode of alternately repeating the continuous forward and reverse rotation of the rotary drum 4 at such a rotation speed that the laundry 21 lifted by the rotation of the rotary drum 4 falls down from the height where the gravity exceeds. In a washing step or the washing and rinsing steps, the forward and reverse arc rotation drive mode and the forward and reverse continuous rotation drive mode are alternately executed, and the execution ratio of the forward and reverse arc rotation drive mode is made lower than the execution ratio of the forward and reverse continuous rotation drive mode.
