A damping force control type shock absorber is provided to facilitate assembling work of the shock absorber by installing a damping force variable valve at the inside of the shock absorber so that an interference area is minimized when the shock absorber is mounted on a vehicle. A damping force control type shock absorber comprises a base shell(52), an inner tube(54) installed at the inside of the base shell, a separator tube(56) interposed between the base shell and the inner tube, and a damping force variable valve(80). The damping force variable valve includes a housing(82) installed at a bottom of the shock absorber, a valve portion(90) installed in the housing, and an actuator portion(100) connected to the valve portion. The housing is arranged in the base shell. The valve portion is provided at a bottom thereof with a base cap to secure the base shell and the lower part of the valve portion.
