PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a position measuring apparatus capable of detecting the distances even of objects to be measured which have difficult to detect by a conventional method using correlation. SOLUTION: An illuminating device illuminates an object to be measured with spot light through a lens. Right and left cameras image the position of the spot light to acquire a spot image (to be referred to as an image spot) in an imaging plane. In the imaged spot, a point having the highest luminance in an imaged screen or a point having luminance exceeding a prescribed threshold value is, for example, a point irradiated with the spot light. When the location of the imaged spot on the imaging plane imaged by the right and left cameras are known, it is possible to measure, by a stereoscopic method, the distance to the point irradiated with the spot light.
