PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shock absorber of an elevator enabling reduction in the depth dimension of a pit and an elevator device having the shock absorber. SOLUTION: This elevator device having a shock absorber 1 comprises a cylinder 2 installed at the bottom of a hoistway and filled with hydraulic oil 5; and a plunger 3 inserted into the cylinder 2 and displaceable in the vertical direction. When a car reaches a position lower than a predetermined height, the plunger 3 is so lowered as not to be collided with the car.
