PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an adhesive application device, with which a sure bookbinding stitch is possible by adjusting the relative positional relationship between the end faces of sheets and a coating means in response to the thickness of a sheet bundle. SOLUTION: This adhesive application device is equipped with a sheet piling means, a sheet bundle holding means for postioningly setting the sheet bundle to the predetermined paste application position, a bundle thickness recognizing means for judging the thickness of the sheet bundle piled up on the sheet piling means, a paste container arranged at the paste application position for housing adhesive and an adhesive application means arranged on the paste container for applying the adhesive to he sheet bundle and a shifting means for shifting the adhesive application means or the sheet bundle holding means in order to apply the adhesive to the saddle stitched end face of the sheet bundle held at the paste application position. In addition, a positional controlling means is installed which keeps at least either one of the sheet bundle holding means and the adhesive application means constituted as to adjust its relative position in the direction of the sheet bundle thickness and adjusts the relative position in the direction of a bundle thickness of the saddle stitched end face and the adhesive application means from the thickness information of the sheet bundle sent from the bundle thickness recognizing means.
