The invention relates to honeycomb structures based on lignocellulosic materials and processes for producing these structures. In accordance with the invention there is provided a lignocellulosic structure comprising a thin layer comprising SiO<SUB>2</SUB> on at least part of its surface. A process of the invention involves contacting a lignocellulosic material, preferably in a continuous fashion, with a SiO<SUB>2</SUB> precursor.
