摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optimal composition for metal machining with excellent robustness, preferably a heat-resistant superalloy, for a sialon-based ceramic for metal cutting tool application. <P>SOLUTION: This invention relates to a ceramic material which is based on a heat-resistant hard phase containing &beta;-sialon (Si<SB>6-z</SB>Al<SB>z</SB>O<SB>z</SB>N), &alpha;-sialon, TiN, Ti(C, N), or TiC and a grain boundary amorphous or partially crystalline phase and contains yttrium. The &beta;-sialon phase has a z value of 0.3-0.8. The quantity of the heat-resistant hard phase is 10-20 mass%.
