PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a shift-shock from occurring at the time of switching from a continuously variable transmission mechanism to a reduction mechanism and vice versa, in a continuously variable transmission having as an output transfer mechanism both a reduction mechanism comprising gear-pairs and a continuously variable transmission mechanism. SOLUTION: The continuously variable transmission comprises: the continuously variable transmission mechanism 6 which continuously varies a transmission gear ratio; a reduction mechanism 10 which comprises gear pairs and is placed parallel with the continuously variable transmission mechanism 6 between an input shaft 2 and an output shaft 16; and a transmission path-switching means 15 which effects a change between an output transmission path wherein the output is transmitted from the input shaft 2 to the output shaft 16 through the continuously variable transmission mechanism 6, and an output transmission path wherein an output is transmitted from the input shaft 2 to the output shaft 16 through the reduction mechanism 10. The transmission gear ratio of the reduction mechanism 10 is set to satisfy the following two requirements: the transmission gear ratio of the reduction mechanism 10 is set smaller than the highest transmission gear ratio of the continuously variable transmission mechanism 6; and the product of the transmission gear ratio of the reduction mechanism 10 and the output transmission efficiency is greater than the product of the highest transmission gear ratio of the continuously variable transmission mechanism 6 and the output transmission efficiency at the highest transmission gear ratio.
