Sorting dissimilar materials, such as sorting plastics from wood, foam, o r rubber. These systems and methods employ either dielectric heating or fluo rescent dye absorption characteristics of materials to distinguish the mater ials. The systems and methods may employ differential dielectric heating and thermal imaging to sort wood, rubber, and foam, from plastic, metals, and o ther materials that do not undergo dielectric heating. Similarly, systems an d methods may employ the greater liquid absorption properties of wood, rubbe r, and foam as compared to plastic. The dissimilar materials are subjected t o fluorescent dye and carrier liquid, that is differentially absorbed by obj ects. Fluorescent imaging can be used to distinguish the materials. In eithe r case, a computer-controlled system can be used to sort material types base d on an evaluation of the thermal or fluorescent image.
