The method involves forming a backing (108) that defines a face side (100I) of a back side (100E) of a mat (100). External weft threads (111) are inserted in the back side. Relief threads (103) are incorporated at the mat such that relief threads surround some of the weft threads. Secondary bonding threads (131) are incorporated in a warp direction (C-C') for connecting each weft thread to the backing. Two internal weft threads (112) are connected in the warp direction by primary bonding threads (121). An independent claim is also included for a mat comprising external weft threads.
