In a process for the preheating of metal in the form of wire or strip for direct further working a cyclically operating deformation machine, by which an electrical current is passed through the metal wire via contact devices, the full current is passed through the workpiece during the stationary period and a reduced current is passed during the entry movement into the deformation machine. The device for carrying out the process uses an equipment for feeding in the workpiece, e.g. rollers and a resistance heating plant equipped with contact devices for conducting the current with control equipment for the transmitted paper which is connected with the working cycle of the deformation equipment. The process avoids the arcing which occurs during transmission of high current during movement of the workpiece, resulting in damage or hardening which can affect workability in subsequent operations.
