A magnesium salt of a copolymer obtainable by hydrolysis of a copolymer which consists of recurring units (A) of formula -C 2 H 2 (R)(R<SP>1</SP>)-, where R is a linear or branched C 8-26 hydrocarbon radical which may be substituted by hydroxyl groups or hetero atoms and/or contains chain hetero atoms, and R<SP>1</SP> is -H or -CH 3 , and units (B) of one or more of formula where R 1 is -H or -CH 3 , is claimed. The salt may be made by copolymerizing one or more anhydrides or acids of formula and one or more monomers of formula C 2 H 2 RR<SP>1</SP>, where R 1 , R and R<SP>1</SP> are as above, and either (a) reacting the copolymer with magnesium acetate or (b) hydrolysing the copolymer (if it is the anhydride) which is then converted to its alkali metal salt and reacted with magnesium chloride. |
