A wind turbine rotor blade 2 comprises a root portion 14 having a plurality of inserts embedded therein. At least two of the inserts are of different length L1, L2. In this way, when the rotor blade is secured to a wind turbine hub, the stress concentrations will not lie along the same chord-line, but would be spread over a spanwise area. Ideally each insert / retainer locking member has an external tapered at one end, and comprised an internally threaded bore. Each grooved bore can be engaged by a single bolt. A third length L3 of turbine blade inserts may be used. The material of the blade is ideally composite, and the retainers / inserts may be installed during moulding or adhesively located in a machined hole after fabrication of the blade. The turbine blade is preferably mounted on a hub located atop a tower.
