[Also in Divisions A5, C1 and D2] Novel iodine complexes of sulphonium or sulphoxonium compounds of the formula wherein m is 0 or 1, n is 0 when m is 1, or is 0, 1, 2 or 3 when m is 0, X is a Cl, Br or I atom, each R<SP>1</SP> is an alkyl group of up to 16 carbon atoms with the proviso that at least one R<SP>1</SP> has 2 or more carbon atoms when m and n are 0, and Ph represents a phenyl, alkylphenyl, hydroxyphenyl or carboxyalkoxy group, are made by treating the appropriate sulphonium or sulphoxonium halides with iodine. Specified products include the dodecyl dimethyl sulphonium and sulphoxonium chloride diodides and carboxymethoxyphenyl dimethyl sulphonium chloride diiodide. The products are used as X-ray contrast agents and as germicides, especially in water treatment and paper manufacture (see Divisions A5, C1 and D2). |
