1330319 Continuous casting; making moulds KABEL - UND METALLWERKE GUTEHOFFNUNGSHUTTE AG 9 Oct 1970 [14 Nov 1969] 48097/70 Headings B3A and B3F In a copper mould for continuous casting of steel &c. and of one-piece or separate-plate construction, the cavity wall or walls is or are defined in part (and at least where contacted by the molten metal) by the surface of an insert 5 (or surfaces of inserts) of a metallic material, such as Cu-Cr, Cu-Co-Be or Cu-Mo alloy, having a lower thermal conductivity than Cu, the insert(s) providing a single band of the material right round the wall or walls. As shown, the insert 5, in a mould wall or one of the walls 6, extends from one end of the mould almost to the other end and tapers so that heat transfer increases in the direction of casting. The insert may be short in axial extent and spaced from the mould ends. It may be reversely tapered to decrease heat transfer. The insert(s) may be of sintered metal, e.g. sintered in situ; they may be bonded in the mould wall(s). An insert may be a ring fastened in a groove by hot or high speed rolling or by explosive charge. |
