Surface is brought into contact with a solution containing ammonium sulphate and mercury chloride. The solution preferably contains copper sulphate and has a pH of 4 to 5, whereby the ammonium sulphate concentration exceeds 25 g/l. Vert-de-gris film serves to protect the surface from any undesirable deterioration such as corrosion, as well as to lend it an artistic and decorative appearance.
