A stirrer-type ball mill has one or more agitating discs having a diameter between 70% and 90% of the diameter of the vessel and provided with ribs or grooves. The grinding balls have a diameter from 0.1 mm. to 5 mm. and may be made e.g. of glass, ceramic metal, P.V.C., polystyrene or p.t.f.e. The circumferential speed of an agitator ranges from 5 to 30 m/sec. Balls are separated from ground material by e.g. a stationary or rotary screen or a known cooperating ring and disc arrangement or an external separator. In one embodiment separators or filters 16, 17, Fig. 8, include rotary screens or filter cloths. Refined material balls and gas enter the separator 16. Balls and coarse material are returned via the cover 3 and fine material and gas supplied by a blower 18 are supplied to the separator 17 which removes and returns the gas via the blower. A filter may include two counter-rotating filter elements 23, 24, Fig. 9, on separate shafts, or elements driven in the same direction on a common shaft, Fig. 10 (not shown). |
