A device for orbital welding of butt-joints of pipes, e.g. by non-consumable electrode gasshielded arc welding, comprises a body 1 securable to one of the pipes to be welded, and a torch 3 displaceable around the joint and mounted on a face-plate 2 revolvable in guides 13, 14, to which face-plate there is connected a slide-block 10 for displacing the torch across the joint, the slide-block and a drive for displacement thereof being mounted on the body and carrying the guidds 13, 14. The device is securable to the pipe by rotation of a shaft 4 fixed in the body, whereby a nut 5 with a tapering surface urges apart top arms of two pivoted levers (6, 61) (Fig. 2, not shown), whereby the bottom arms of the levers press and hold the pipe against a member (8). Mounted telescopically in the shaft 4 is a further shaft 17 the lower portion of which is fixed in the body and carries a bevel gear 18, 25, rotation of which causes relative movement between two screw-members 24, 26, the member 26 being movable and mounting the slide-block 10, guides 13, 14 and the face-plate 2 and torch 3. In a modification (Fig. 4, not shown) the linkage between the shaft (17a) and the slide-block comprises a bell-crank lever instead of the bevel gear. In further modifications, the shaft for driving the slide-block is separate from the shaft 4 operating the clamping mechanism.
