Process for preparing cpds. formula: - (I) R=H, alkalimetal, or (1-6C) alkyl, and R'-R4 = H, Cl, Br and/or I. - Except that at least one of R' and R2 is not = H - and if R=H or (1-2) alkyl R'-R4 may not all = Cl. - and if R3 = R4 = H; R' is not = R2 = Cl. - and salts of (I). - Hypolipaemics and hypocholesterolaemics. Dose = 50-2000 mg/d. - p-Iodophenol (22g.) in MeCONMe2(50 ml) was added to NaH(2 deg. 6g) in MeCONMe2(50 ml) at 5 deg., stirred 1 hr., and added KI (1 g) and methyl dichloracetate (7.2g) in MeCONMe2 (50 ml). The mixture was stirred 19 hr. at 50 deg., dild. with H2O (1l), and extd. with Et2O (3X200 ml). The extract was washed with 2N-NaOH (2X150 ml), and brine, dried over MgSO4, evapd. in vac., and recryst. from Pr21O, giving methyl bis-(p-iodophenoxy)-acetate, m.p. 104.5-106 deg.
