PURPOSE: A modernizing method for an existing elevator and an elevator apparatus are provided to modernize a direct drive type hydraulic elevator apparatus into a rope equation elevator apparatus without change in elevator car size. CONSTITUTION: An elevator apparatus comprises an elevator car(2), a jack protection pipe(6), a balance weight(7), main ropes(8a,8b) and a hoister(9). The elevator car ascends and descends inside an elevator hoistway. The jack protection pipe is laid under the ground of the hoistway in order to be opened on a pit floor of the hoistway. The balance weight raises the space formed within the jack protection pipe reversely. The main ropes reduce the elevating distance of the balance weight than that of the elevator car. The hoister raises the elevator car through the main ropes.
