Articles of metal or made conductive are lacquered by electrophoretic anodic deposition of substances contg. carboxyl groups from their aq. soap solns. with water-soluble N base, comprising a) reaction prodn. of (I) curable phenol-formaldehyde condensate, (II) polyhydroxyl cpd. free from aromatic and maleic acid radicals and (III) adduct of maleic acid or anhydride and olefinic, opt. polymerised fatty or carboxylic acids or their natural or synthetic esters, with or without addn. of OH-free polyol esters prepd. from polycarboxylic acids; or b) mixt. of I with reaction prod. of II and III. Technique is esp. useful for painting vehicles. Satisfactory hardness is obtd. in conjunction with resistance to water and saponification (salt spray test.).
