Siloxanes have the formula in which M is a monovalent cation, a is 2 to 4, x is 0, 1 or 2, b and c are defined in terms of R, R1 is a monovalent hydrocarbon group having up to 18 carbon atoms and free from aliphatic unsaturation; R is a polyvalent group selected from: (1) di-, tri-, or tetra-valent groups R11 is a monovalent (up to C 19 ) group selected from saturated hydrocarbon groups, methylol, alkanoyloxymethyl and alkenyloxymethyl, b is 1 to 3, c is 1 to 3, b + c is 2 to 4 and is equal to the valance of R; (2) di- and tri-valent groups in which the alkenyloxy group has up to six carbon atoms, b is 1 or 2, c is 1 or 2 and b + c = 2 or 3 and is equal to the valence of R; (3) divalent polyoxyalkylene groups -(-C y H 2y -) p - in which y is 2 to 4, p is 2 to 100, b is 1 and C is 1; (4) divalent groups: -C m R0 r H 2m-r 0 in which R‹ is a monovalent (up to C 18 ) C-bonded hydrocarbon group free from aliphatic unsaturation, m is 2 to 4, r is 0 or an integer of 1 to m; b is 1 and C is 1; and (5) divalent groups in which R111 is C 2-4 alkylene or alkyleneoxyalkylene (C 2-4 alkylene), b is 1 and C is 1. Each sulphate group MO 3 SO- is bonded to a carbon atom of a C-C chain in the R group. The siloxane contains 1-100 mole per cent of units of Formula I and 0-99 mole per cent of units Z z SiO 4-z/2 (II) where Z is a monovalent hydrocarbon group free from aliphatic unsaturation or a group DO(C y H 2y O) s C a H 2a in which D is H, C 1-18 alkyl or aryl, y is 2 to 4, a is 2 or 3, s is 1 to 100 and z is 0 to 3. M may be ammonium, K, Na or tetraalkylammonium (C 1-18 alkyl). In a preferred siloxane, M is ammonium, a is 3, b is 1, c is 1, R1 is methyl, x is 1, R is a group of Formula (4) in which r is 0, m is 2, Z is methyl, z is 3 and the siloxane contains 331/ 3 % sulphatoorganosiloxane units and 662/ 3 % of units II. The siloxanes may be prepared by reacting an alkenyl organic ether sulphate: [MO 3 SO] b R[Alkenyl] c and a siloxane having at least one group: HSi(R1) x O 3-x/2 in the presence of a platinum catalyst. Uses: Foaming agents and surfactants.
