The invention relates to a process for preparing 1:1- and/or 2:1-addition products of alkyne compounds and maleic acid derivatives of the formula wherein X is oxygen or the group NR (R = H or C 1 -C 4 alkyl group, which comprises irradiating a mixture of these compounds with light preferably having a wavelength below 400 mÁ in the presence of a solvent and a photo-sensitizer. In an example maleic anhydride and acetylene are irradiated in the presence of benzophenone to produce bis-3,31-(cyclo propane-1,2-dicarb. oxylic anhydride). In another example by reacting the imide instead of the anhydride bis- 3,31 - (cyclopropane - 1,2 dicarboxylic acid imide) is produced. Several compounds are claimed per se.
