1,182,636. Stabilization of caprolactone in the presence of formic acid. UGINE KUHLMANN. 24 Oct., 1967 [25 Oct, 19661, No. 48250/67. Heading C2C. #-Caprolactone is stabilized in environments in which it is in the presence of formic acid by the addition of a salt of formic acid or a compound which will react with the formic acid present to form a formate in situ. The stabilization may be carried out during or after the formation of #-caprolactone. The added formates may be of ammonia, alkaline metals, alkaline earth metals, magnesium, zinc, aluminium or amines or the formates of these metals may be prepared in situ from the corresponding oxides, hydroxides, alcoholates, carbonates, bicarbonates or acetates. Stabilization may also be effected, after preparation of #-caprolactone, by addition of primary, secondary or tertiary amines or oxides of aliphatic and cycloaliphatic tertiary amines containing 1-15 carbon atoms, or, during the preparation, by addition of t-amines which are not easily oxidized or oxides or amines stable in respect of the peroxide compounds present in the environment. The stabilizer is added so that the ratio of formate ions to free formic acid is between 0À001 and 0À5, preferably 0À005 and 0À1. |
