<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display device consisting of an off-axis optical system capable of yielding a high contrast ratio. <P>SOLUTION: The projection type display device 1 is provided with a reflection type liquid crystal light valve 3 constituted by interposing a liquid crystal layer of a vertical orientation mode between a pair of substrates and has an off-axis optical system arrangement in which a prescribed angle is formed between the optical axis L1 of incident light to the light valve 3 and the optical axis L2 of reflected light from the light valve 3 to a projection optical system 4. When the incident angle θ of the incident light is in a range of 5° to 15°, the pre-tilt angle of liquid crystal molecules is in a range of 1° to 10°, or when the incident angle θ of the incident light is in a range of ≥15°, the pre-tilt angle of the liquid crystal molecules is in a range of ≥10°. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
