A method of insulating a temperature-sensitive element comprises forming a first layer of a fibre slurry, removing a portion of the liquid to thicken the slurry, positioning a temperaturesensitive element on the layer, covering the element with a second layer of fibre slurry and removing the liquid from the layers to cause them to unite and form a composite blanket of densified fibres compacted around the element. As shown, Fig. 2, a first layer (13) of slurry is poured on to a screen 11 supported in a box 12 and a vacuum is applied to the lower end of the box to remove a portion of the liquid to form a layer 13<SP>1</SP> of thickened slurry. A plurality of thermocouples 15 are laid on this layer and covered with a second layer 13<SP>11</SP> of slurry and the vacuum is again applied to remove the remainder of the liquid. The resulting blanket may be divided between the thermocouples to form a plurality of separate devices. The slurry may comprise fibres of felt or paper or refractory fibres, e.g. of asbestos, glass, alumina or silica, together with a liquid the bulk of which is water and containing a binder. The slurry may have the consistency of a dough or paste. A stiffening rod or tube may also be included in the blanket. A thermocouple embedded in an alumina fibre blanket may be utilized to measure the temperature of molten aluminium. The heat-sensitive element may also be a resistance thermometer or a thermistor. |
