PURPOSE: A semiconductor memory device and a memory system are provided to convert an access mode without stopping the access operation. CONSTITUTION: A semiconductor memory device includes an external terminal and an access operation control circuit(18). A first signal is supplied to the external terminal. The access operation control circuit generates the signal indicating the access operation of a core circuit(34) after the next cycle based on the pulse width of the first signal. A third signal for latching the data is generated based on the first signal or second signal supplied to the external terminal. A first access mode after the next cycle is set based on the first signal. A second access mode after the next cycle is set based on a second signal. The access operation to the core circuit is performed based on the first access mode or second access mode.
