LAMINATED WEBS

[Also in Division B8] A laminated web comprises a series of laminated blanks, each of which when severed from the web may be folded to form a packet, especially a cigarette packet, in which the layer of the blank which is to form the outermost layer of the packet is of larger surface area than the remaining layer(s) and the remaining layer(s) are cut away so that the areas of the inner surface of the outermost layer which overlap when the blank is folded are exposed and the outermost layer is coated with a sealable material which becomes positioned between two pieces of the outermost layer where it is necessary to make a seal when forming a self-supporting packet. The web may comprise an outermost layer 5 of a film of cellulose derivative or biaxially oriented polypropylene laminated at its central portion (shaded area of Fig. 3) to a paper layer 2 which in turn is laminated to a composite layer 1 of paper and metal foil. The layer 5 is coated with a sealable material over the whole of its surface laminated to layer 2 and is provided with a tear tape 6. The layers 1 and 2 are cut away at the edges and at 3 and 4. The blanks are severed from the web by first making cuts from a hole 7 to each side of the bridge between the cut-outs 3 and 4 and then cutting along line X-X1 (Fig. 1). When the blank is folded, the film behind 3 and 4 overlaps the film at the other end of the blank and the portions extending beyond layers 1 and 2 will overlap at the top and bottom of the web. An alternative form of web comprises a composite layer 8 of paper/ Al foil laminated to a wider outermost layer 9 of polypropylene, the exposed zone 10 of which is coated with sealable material. Areas of film 9 are also exposed by cut-away portions 11 through the centre of which along line B-B1 the blanks are severed from the web. Tear tapes 12 and perforations 13 are provided along the web to enable easy opening of the packages formed therefrom.
