1306591 Laminates; seaming non-metallic sheet material CHRYSLER UNITED KING- DOM Ltd 12 Jan 1971 [21 Jan 1970] 3050/70 Headings B5M and B5N A method of forming a surface recess in a composite panel comprising a rigid layer 11 and a flexible layer 13 e,g. a fusion blown flexible PVC sheet material spaced apart by a padding layer 12 formed from a material capable of being welded to the rigid and flexible layers, e.g. a foamed or fibrous thermoplastic material, comprises welding the flexible, padding, and rigid layers together along a line extending around the required recess, cutting through the flexible and padding layers around the inner periphery of the weld line and removing said flexible and padding layers from within the weld line to leave a recess in the surface of the panel within the weld line. The welding and severing operations may be carried out simultaneously. The welding may be effected by resistance welding or by dielectric welding. The flexible layer may be pressed towards the rigid layer along the line of the required recess, thus compressing the padded layer during welding so that, on completion of the welding, the welded portion of the flexible layer is spaced toward the rigid layer from the remainder of the flexible layer. An apparatus for use in the method comprises a dielectric welding electrode 16 having an elongated working surface 17 for encircling the required recess to be cut in the composite panel and a cutter 18 having a cutting edge 20 extending along the inner periphery of the electrode for severing the flexible and padding layers around the inner periphery of the weld line, the cutting edge of the cutter projecting beyond the working surface of the electrode. In operation, the apparatus 14 engages the flexible layer 13 of the panel and the opposite face of the panel is engaged by a further electrode (not shown) having a working surface corresponding in contour to the surface 17. |
