1286778 Sterilisation STORD BARTZ INDUSTRI AS 19 April 1971 [27 April 1970] 27227/71 Heading A2D A process for the batch sterilisation of a water-containing animal material and the evaporation of the water content thereof comprises leading the composition through a space defined between inner and outer heating surfaces by rotating the former in a given direction, said inner surface representing a far larger proportion of the total heating surface than the stationary outer surface, arresting the passage of the composition by rotating the inner surface in the reverse direction thereby bringing about stirring of the composition. The composition is sterilised and its water content evaporated by heating, then expelled from the space by rotating the inner surface in its original direction. The process may be carried out in the apparatus shown in Fig. 1 wherein the animal material is fed via intakes 16 into a cylindrical housing 10. Within this housing there is positioned a rotating heating body 20 which consists of a hollow cylinder 23 having welded on its external surface, a series of hollow disc elements 26. To the peripheries of the hollow elements 26 there is welded a vane system 27 consisting of vanes 28 and 24 which system in the axial direction of the housing crosses one or more of the elements 26. The angular orientation of the vanes in respect to the longitudinal axis of housing 23 is such that during rotation of the housing in a given direction, the animal material is fed through and expelled from the apparatus whereas rotation in the reverse direction does not cause any longitudinal movement of the material but imparts a stirring action to the material. Steam, for sterilisation and evaporation purposes, is supplied to the apparatus through the hollow shaft journal 24a and into the interior of the disc-shaped elements 26. The process is particularly applicable to the treatment of butcher's offal, animal entrails, animal meat, feathers, blood and fish waste. |
