A honeycomb structure is formed by integrally bonding a plurality of honeycomb-shaped segments. Each of the segments includes a honeycomb-shaped porous base material and a modification portion, the modification portion being formed by impregnating a part of the base material with a slurry that contains particles smaller than an average pore size of the base material, and heating the base material. The base material has a porosity of 30 to 80% and an average pore size of 5 to 40 µm. The modification portion is formed within a length of one-tenth to half of a total length of the segments from an outlet-side end face along an axial direction of the cells. The modification portion has a porosity lower than that of the base material by 2 to 20% and an average pore size smaller than that of the base material by 0.1 to 10 µm. |
