An imaging apparatus comprises a beam splitter that receives incident electromagnetic radiation and has a layer of transparent conductive oxide, such as indium tin oxide, on the front surface of a substrate transparent to visible and/or near infrared wavelengths. A camera detects thermal radiation reflected from the beam splitter for display of a thermal image, which is viewable in combination with an image formed from visible light transmitted by the beam splitter. The visible image may be obtained from a camera which detects the transmitted light, so that the thermal and visible images can be displayed on a display screen. Alternatively, the thermal image alone can be displayed on a display device, with the transmitted visible light directed to a viewing aperture for viewing via a semi-transparent mirror which also allows viewing of the thermal image on the display device, one image seen in transmission through the mirror and the other image seen in reflection.
