PURPOSE: A system for relaying data between heterogeneous communication networks by using a wireless LAN and a method thereof are provided to facilitate the handover between heterogeneous systems and perform the packet processing and converting at high speed. CONSTITUTION: A relay system comprises a mobile communication network, a wireless LAN, a terminal and an interworking server. The terminal can perform communication with the mobile communication network through the wireless LAN, processes the handover to the mobile communication network or wireless LAN according to the movement between a base station area and a wireless LAN area, and performs the protocol conversion corresponding to the handover. The interworking server controls the connection between the terminal and the mobile communication network or wireless LAN according to the location and connection information of the terminal.
