A composition for liquid crystal alignment, a liquid crystal alignment layer formed by using the composition, a method for preparing the liquid crystal alignment layer, and a liquid crystal display are provided to improve alignment stability, long-termed reliability and afterglow. A composition for liquid crystal alignment comprises a polyimide or polyamic acid having a maleimide group in at least one terminal of a main chain and having a molecular weight of 500-30,000, and an organic material having at least one amine functional group at terminal. Also the composition comprises a polyimide or polyamic acid having an amine group in at least one terminal of a main chain and having a molecular weight of 500-30,000, and an organic material having at least one maleimide functional group at terminal.
