Production of grey cast iron cylinders with a ledeburite structured contact surface for the cylinder is effected by the exertion of a chilling effect of a steel core in the mould. The wall thickness of the steel core is varied so as to induce varying chilling effects. Pref. the hollow steel core is tapered, being thicker at the top, thus giving rise to a thicker ledeburite layer at the top than at the bottom. The process is intended for the production of I.C. engine cylinders.
|
