PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the image reading apparatus capable of supporting image reading for a thick original document and also an original document larger than an original table of the apparatus body without influencing the size of an apparatus body. SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus pushes an original document at original tables 2 and 52 mounted with a reading mechanism in apparatus bodies 1 and 51, through pressure plates 3 and 53 attached to the apparatus bodies 1 and 51 in a turnable fashion, and reads the original document. First hinges 4a and 54a are arranged at a turnable center of one end portion at the side of the apparatus bodies. Second hinge 4b and 54b, which are a turnable center, are arranged at an end portion at the side of the pressure plates facing at the first hinges.
