PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent (EL) element which can avoid damage of an organic layer during sputtering of upper electrode preparation, and possesses upper electrodes with both sufficient light transmittance and excellent conductivity, and its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: The organic EL element includes an organic EL layer 40 which at least includes an electroluminescent layer and is interposed by a primary electrode and a second electrode 50. Light produced in the organic light-emitting layer is emitted from the second electrode 50 side to outside of the organic EL element. The second electrode 50 has multilayer structure which consists of alternative laminate of primary multiple layers 51, containing metal or alloy, and second layer 52, containing transparent material. Multilayer structure of this second electrode 50 is constituted so that the primary layer 51 is in contact with the organic EL layer 40, and thickness of each layer in the second layer 52 is set to≤4 nm.
